Usha Purohit has always been good at painting and she learnt the art of painting on glass more than a decade back. Over the last two years, with the kids grown up and in school, she revived her interest in glass painting creating painted panels for her husband’s office as well as framed images in a number of sizes that she gifted to friends and relatives. Slowly she began to receive orders for paintings with specific images and sizes and that’s when she decided to think about her hobby as a serious entrepreneurial venture. "I work with imported glass paints that are UV resistant so they don’t fade. I also pay special attention to the glass (textured) used as well as the frames so that the work really stands out. I use a special technique to create ‘joints’ so that the works get a ‘stained glass’ look," she explains. Usha has identified various themes and images that match well with different parts of the house/office/showroom. Images are also made in sets of three or four same-theme paintings that go together as in a kitchen or a pillar or along the staircase for instance.

Usha’s large separation panels (where the glass paintings are framed on stand-alone wooden partitions or framed-in sections to demarcate spaces in a room) are also well executed and can be designed to co-ordinate with the interior of the room/s (also for ceilings and window panels). Usha began experimenting with wrought iron frames and has developed an entire line of glass paintings framed in wrought iron but in a ‘usable’ kind of a way. For example, a small glass painting featuring a simple Ganesha image is embellished with key-holder hooks. Thus the work serves a double purpose – there is a welcoming Ganesha image right at the entrance to the home as well as a convenient key holder where all the keys can be hung for easy accessibility! Usha also does Tanjore paintings which she frames in specially ordered matching heavy wooden frames. But she works on them by order only.
