Hema Shah’s Saaj is an extraordinary collection of all that is beautiful and classical in traditional South Indian wood and metal craft. Hema’s strength lies in sourcing renowned Master Craftsmen and accessing the best designs from them. She also stocks original Tanjore paintings in all sizes in traditional Chettinad frames. Saaj specialises in artefacts made from wood (often teak), bronze and panchadhatu, especially idols of Laxmi, Ganpati and Saraswati from one to six feet high. The wooden artefacts are available in natural wood finish as well as with traditional coloured effects. Hema is very adept at turning wooden brackets and other antique architectural pieces into attractive coffee tables, consoles, doorknobs and handles and other materials of daily use. Her exquisite carved swings and wooden panels are a Saaj special. Her metal range includes brass swing chains, lamps in assorted sizes (from north India also), urlis, door handles and a vast variety of small decorative/usable artefacts. While these form the main products at Saaj, there is also a wide mix of works from rural and tribal India – Bastar metal images, Warli artworks, Madhubani paintings, reed and bamboo dining ware reinforced with brass pipins, and so on. Hema has also worked on combining tribal artworks onto user-friendly products. For example, she has framed single image Madhubani works into a compact side stool that can be folded when not in use and hung on the wall to look like a framed painting! A lot of Saaj artefacts are picked up by NRIs and Hema has experienced agents who deliver the materials abroad to buyer homes.
